Getting Here
If you do decide to drive to the Bay of Islands from Auckland it will take you about 3 hours to get to Opua – just several minutes south of Paihia. Travel North from Auckland along State Highway 1 which runs into State Highway 11 at Kawakawa. Then follow the signs to the Bay of Islands and the Twin Coast Discovery Highway. Take your time and make the most of the picturesque landscape of beaches, rolling hills and native bush with plenty of stops at the various lookouts and rest areas. The Bay of Islands being further north, on average always seems to attract warmer temperatures and sunnier skies than Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf, perfect for a scenic drive.
There are bus services available from Auckland to provide transport to the Bay of Islands. The InterCity bus from Auckland to Paihia departs daily from the InterCity SkyCity Terminal at 102 Hobson Street, Auckland Central. The bus arrives at the Paihia Maritime Building, after a journey of approximately 4 hours and arrangements can be made for the short trip from Paihia to the Bucket List mooring in Opua.
Alternatively, you can get a flight from Auckland, to the Bay of Islands local airport with Air New Zealand, which only takes 45 minutes.
